Lymphedema

Lymphedema

Lymphedema most commonly develops in the United States status post breast mastectomy. Signs/symptoms would be felt in the affected arm after surgery, and may present at any point in time from the next day to several years later. Common symptoms are swelling, sensation of heaviness, tingling, and/or sudden clothing/jewelry restrictions. A patient should report any of these sensations to their medical doctor and may benefit from therapy by a certified lymphedema therapist. Complete decongestive therapy is the standard of care and consists of compression, manual lymph drainage, therapeutic exercises and skin/nail care.
